High-Speed Laser Cutting and Process Integration for Tube, Pipe, and Structural Materials

The Mazak FT-250 is a 6kW fiber laser-cutting system engineered for high-speed, high-quality processing of tube, pipe, and structural materials. Its U-axis control supports precise cutting across a wide range of materials, including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and brass.

The machine can process round pipe up to 10 inches in diameter and square pipe up to 8 × 8 inches, depending on the selected loading configuration. Its standard 2.5D laser head also supports bevel cutting, helping manufacturers prepare parts for downstream welding and assembly without moving them to separate equipment.

By synchronizing the C-axis with the linear movement of the cutting head, the FT-250 can process structural profiles such as H-, I-, and L-shaped beams. This coordinated movement supports complex joint geometries while maintaining accurate positioning and consistent cut quality.

An available rotary tool unit with a 13-position automatic tool changer integrates drilling, tapping, thermal drilling, chamfering, and other secondary operations into the machine. Combining these processes with laser cutting reduces material transfers, setup time, work-in-process, and overall production lead times.

Automated functions—including calibration and nozzle cleaning—help reduce operator intervention and support consistent performance during extended production runs. Optional technologies can also measure the outside diameter of the material, compensate for distortion, locate weld seams, and protect interior workpiece surfaces from spatter and burns.

The SmoothTUBE CNC control features a specialized graphical interface designed for tube and pipe processing. Dual touch panels and a large 21.5-inch display provide access to machine status, processing conditions, scheduled operations, and reprocessing functions from one centralized control.

Multiple loading and unloading configurations are available to support different production requirements. High-capacity bundle loading enables continuous processing of standard pipe and tube, while the V-support conveyor accommodates structural materials, irregular geometries, and high-mix production.
